ADHD

Via Pub Med Health
ADHD is a problem with a combination of inattentiveness, hyper-activity, and/or impulsiveness.  It is most commonly diagnosed during childhood, as it affects 3-5% of school aged children.

ADHD appears to run in families, but it is unsure what exactly causes it.  There are theories that believe ADHD starts early in child development, while others hypothesize that it is over-stimulation of a certain part of the brain.  Depression, lack of sleep, learning disabilities, and behavior disorders can be confused with ADHD, so a child suspected with ADHD should be carefully examined by a doctor to probably diagnose the behavior.

Typical Symptoms:

1. Lack of Attention
  • Fails to give close attention to details
  • Difficulty keeping attention during tasks
  • Does not listen when spoken to directly
  • Difficulty organizing tasks
  • Easily Distracted
  • Avoids tasks that require sustained mental effort
2. Hyperactivity Symptoms
  • Fidgets with hands or feet in seat
  • Leaves seat when remaining seated is expected
  • Difficulty playing quietly
3. Impulsivity Symptoms
  • Blurts out answers before questions have been completed
  • Difficulty waiting turns
  • Interrupts or intrudes on others

Treatment
Too often, difficult children are incorrectly labeled with ADHD.  On the other hand, some children remain undiagnosed.  It is important to have your child screened by a physician to gain the proper diagnosis.  There are many current treatment regimens, most commonly medication and behavior therapy.   There are several types of ADHD medications on the market as well, all of which are designed to do essentially the same thing.  Therefore follow-up exams are generally common with ADHD patients to ensure the treatment regimen is working most effectively.
